Stanford and The University of Texas Research

Digital Media Academy worked with The University of Texas at Austin (UT) Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) and with Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education to conduct an evaluation of our Tech Camps courses for students aged 12-17.

The EPIC STEM Evaluation Services at UT Austin assisted us in developing a Student Post-Survey to assess the effectiveness and outcomes of our Tech Camps teen courses on student learning, attitudes, and efficacy in STEM. Request the complete research reports down below.

Tech Camps Research Report

This report summarizes the findings of the implementation study conducted on the Digital Media Academy Tech Camp hosted at Stanford University during the summer of 2019. Utilizing a mixed methodology approach inclusive of surveys and focus groups, the researchers aimed to understand the effects of the summer digital tech camp on students’ perceptions and attitudes towards digital media.

While we encourage reading and reviewing the entirety of this document, we provide a few salient findings – the results descriptively suggest that students generally had a positive experience at the camp and would most likely pursue similar opportunities in the future. Overall, students felt that the camp provided them access to meaningful learning experiences that made use of high quality technology and software. The complete report expands upon these highlights.

Personal Strengths

 Students talked about learning about their personal strengths through taking courses at DMA. Students were surprised by how quickly they were able to learn advanced software and make a product that matched their interests.

Autonomy & Freedom

Many of the students in the focus groups talked about how they enjoyed the autonomy and freedom to do projects that fit their interests. Students seemed to like being at Stanford University and getting exposure to campus life.

Collaboration

 ​ Students expressed an appreciation for the ability to work with others and develop projects together. Students also expressed finding common interests and even trying to keep in touch with each other once the course was over.

High Instructor Satisfaction

 In each instance, students talked about feeling supported by well-informed instructors, evidencing that the instructors were well-versed in their technological expertise, but also caring with the children.

Tech Camps Research Report

Digital Media Academy contracted with the Expanding Pathways in Computing (EPIC) STEM Evaluation Services at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) to improve its data collection measures and conduct an external pilot evaluation of its Tech Camps courses for students aged 12-17, which includes 10 courses across its six pathways in Summer 2019.

The objectives of this external evaluation was to develop a Student Post-Survey customized to assess the effectiveness and outcomes of 10 Tech Camps teen courses on student learning, attitudes and efficacy in STEM, and future intent and needs to continue STEM involvement.

High Student Satisfaction

95% of students reported that they were satisfied with the course content and facilities.

Increased Confidence

85% of students reported they are more confident they can learn STEM topics as a result of the course they took.

Improved Attitudes

~95% of students reported their attitudes toward STEM improved as a result of Digital Media Academy.
