UC Irvine Campus Facts

Founded in 1965, UC Irvine is one of the more recent additions to the University of California schools. Despite its youth, UCI has distinguished itself as one of the leading scientific research institutions, housing the Beckman Laser Institute, the Center for Complex Biological Systems, the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, and the W.M. Keck Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry. These centers for research have given way to alumni that have won three Nobel laureates.

The large 1,500 acre campus also holds its share of personality, as residence halls have names such as “Hobbiton”, “Misty Mountain”, and “The Shire”, which references the works of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy, The Lord of the Rings. The undergrad population of 28,000 makes UCI the perfect place to get a taste of college life and higher learning.
