Experience an interactive, hands-on approach to learning Java, one of today’s most widely used and powerful computer-programming languages. This course will use Java fundamentals to explore creativity in the form of making art, games, or desktop apps.  

Students will develop critical thinking skills and even prepare for the AP Computer Science exam while using Java concepts to open the world of programming and spark creativity! No programming experience is required, however a basic understanding of algebra, including variables, graph coordinates and functions, is recommended.

Learning Outcomes

You’ll work closely with other girls tackling coding challenges, learning the fundamentals of Java programming, including concepts like variables, loops, data types, and object-oriented programming.

Each student will create a playable game, a piece of interactive artwork, or develop a project of their choice.

Computer programming code runs your devices and the world. Our Programming courses prepare students with the skills they need to develop their own apps, games, animations, and interactive art in languages such as C#, Java, and Swift.

What is the difference between this course and the other Intro to Java Programming course?

MBG classes are developed exclusively for girls and are led by a female instructional team dedicated to serving as role models. Intro to Programming with Java is a coed course that welcomes girl students who want to learn Java in a coed environment. Both courses share the same goals for building fundamental programming skills. The MBG courses emphasize mentorship and building community among girls. Learn more about Made by Girls.

Why is it recommended to have a background in algebra?

Programming uses advanced math concepts. For example, equations are like functions, and variables are handled in similar ways.

If someone already has some experience, are different skill levels accommodated in the course?

Instructors and TAs are always willing to modify and customize curriculum to make sure that all students are engaged and challenged. The first day or so will be utilized to gauge students’ skills and strengths. We also have advanced extensions for every course, so teachers can challenge advanced students.
