Adventures in Minecraft Game Design

Kids One-Week Camp | Ages 9-12

Design and Build A Minecraft Adventure Map

Minecraft allows players to create their own unique virtual worlds with blocks of material mined from the ground. At the beginning of the week, students will learn how to assess and playtest adventure maps, and then get a preview of different roles of game design, completing a small project in the roles of Artist, Architect, Designer, and Programmer. Through the week, students will work in teams, with one person in each role, to complete a custom adventure map and asset pack.

Minecraft is a “sandbox” game, which lets players create their own world. It allows users to free-build whatever they’d like out of the material they mine from the ground. Does my child need a Minecraft account?

Yes. While no game design or programming experience is required, all students are must have a Minecraft account for this course. You can purchase a standard account and desktop version of Minecraft at Students must bring their account login when they come to class.

Will my child just be playing Minecraft all day?

No. We use Minecraft as a platform to help teach students the various roles required to develop a video game – they stay engaged and learn how to design!
