Using Training Courses for Art, Web, Film, Print, Marketing : Improving my business!

WOW! I had an amazing and intense learning experience at DMA! From the moment that I stepped onto the Stanford campus I new that this event would change my life forever. Digital Media Academy gave me the ability to create my own website (www.bettermurals.com) and portfolio. After returning for multiple years I have been able to design all my new art on my iMac that I bought through DMA for an amazing discounted price.I don’t wast any time or supplies when I am working on my art due to my expertise with Photoshop and Flash.Ā
Last summer I spent a week invested in learning Final Cut Pro and mastering my HD camera so that I can introduce streaming video onto my site with time-laps promos of my murals. This video technique has been a feature that my clients love. Clients can now see how I work, and my company has the professional, impressive edge that I need in this economy.
I actually spend most of my time in front of my Mac. If I am not designing… I am designing. I am also a partner in the very successful marketing and Ā design firm : www.redefinedesign.com. We specialize in building and maintaing company identities and ongoing branding through various medias: web, print, interactive, promo, etc… Our ground breaking relationship plan is specifically designed and tailored to each client. I am signed up for After Effects courses this summer and we are sending a few of our designers to get some training with DMA’s Pro courses.

Extreme Sports Filmmaking Courses : Film Camps
Digital Media Academy News + Events | February 26th, 2009 by Travis
There are a couple reasons why one of my first blogs is about DMAās Action Sports & Media Combination Courses (Skate Boarding & Filmmaking / Surfing & Filmmaking). The first reason is that this is where I got my start with filmmaking. Upon Graduating from the UCSC film school, my first completed film was a 30 min snowboard and skateboarding film. I traveled to Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Colorado to premiere the film. It was such an incredible feeling to have my work up on the big screen and evaluated by my peers. The second reason why I write about these courses is because that is what I am working on right now. In fact I my house is covered with snow and I have been getting some amazing footage.
The idea came up for these courses when Dave Livingston ā DMAās Director of Instruction ā asked me if there were any filmmaking courses that I wish I could have taken in college that werenāt available. Immediately, I thought it would be so cool to have taken a video production class with curriculum that taught actions sports cinematography and editing techniques. The classes were born and they have been a huge success. In these classes we teach students how to plan, shoot, edit, and produce their own action sports videos. At the end of each course the students even get the chance to premiere their film on the ābig screenā, in front of classmates, family, and friends. It is really just awesome what they accomplish in 5 days while having so much fun!
Check out a couple of videos that one talented student Evan created while taking one of our DMAās Action Sports & Media Combination Courses.
Until next time,

Apple, Can You Give my new iMac a Battery Pack?
Digital Media Academy News + Events | February 20th, 2009 by Philip Harding
I love the new black and aluminum Apple iMac. It looks great, and it works great. Awesome design. At Digital Media Academy our courses are alwaysĀ taughtĀ with the latest technology (software and hardware – Mac or PC). We used a hundreds of the latest Intel iMacs in our summer courses this year. We ran a lot of Macs as PC’s running Bootcamp in many of our Video Game Design courses across the country.
I am amazed whenever I see an older, white G5 iMac. The old iMacs look gigantic compared to the new, sleek model. The new iMac is small enough that I have actually taken it with me across the country on plane flights and road trips, to coffee shops and hotels. Yes, I love my 15″ Apple MacBook Pro, but sometimes the iMac becomes my mobile computer of choice. I have been stopped by airport security and stared at by fellow Starbucks drinkers.Ā
The iMac has become so sleek that it fits into this odd category. It’s not really a full desktop computer (as we’ve known them) size, and it’s a little too big to be considered laptop size… but it’s getting close! Sometimes I just have to take it with me.Ā Until I can get my 8″ iPhone… (cough, cough Mr. Steve Jobs) I guess I just have one request…
Can someone make a battery pack for my iMac?

No, this isn’t my black iMac. This is the birthday cake my wife Rachelle made for my party last year. She made an iPhone cake this year. Oh yes. Stay tuned for that!
My Favorite iPhone App of the Moment : Stay Tuned!
Digital Media Academy News + Events | February 19th, 2009 by Philip Harding
I’m loving all the new iPhone Apps! I loved my iPhone before Apps, and now I love my iPhone even more. I will continually be bringing you “My Favorite iPhone App of the Moment.”
I had only dreamed about doing this stuff with my iPhone back when I was standing outside the flagship New York 5th Avenue Apple Store in the crisp, cool evening air unwrapping my first iPhone or when I was standing in the back of the line in the Detroit area, Michigan mall Somerset Apple StoreĀ (yes, we barely made it after trying two other Apple Stores) waiting for my shiny, black iPhone 3G.Ā
This is great! I can control my entire in-home theater system, audio throughout my house, I can listen to any music I want anywhere I want, I can instantly become “knowledgeable” about any random topic, and I can almost never get lost again. This is the life.Ā
Stay tuned as I continue to unwrap the most amazing, fun and useful iPhone Apps!

Learning Apple Final Cut Pro, Logic and Motion : How do I remember?
Digital Media Academy News + Events | February 19th, 2009 by Philip Harding
Written byĀ Seamus HarteĀ of the John Lennon Bus
A lot of the time when Iām out and about on the streets of these United States curious folks come up to me and ask, āHey Seamus, remember this past December when you stayed at a bed and breakfast in San Francisco and trained withĀ DMAĀ instructors for 3 weeks to get your certifications up to date with all theĀ Apple Pro ApplicationsĀ you use on board the Lennon Bus?ā, and I say, āYes! How could I forget the best month of my life!!ā and they say āYes, how could you!!ā and I say, āI donāt know, thatās what I just saidā and they say āRight!!ā, and then they go on with, āso I was wonderingā¦How did you possibly manage to stuff all that information in your head in such a short period of time?ā so that is when I tell them this⦠ I used gFlash Pro.
gFlash Pro is anĀ iPhoneĀ Application that allows you to create and review digital flash cards so you can study and quiz yourself wherever you are. Itās rockinā a stellar 4 star rating on theĀ iTunesĀ App Store. It allows you to create a Google Spreadsheet using Google Documents and then access that information on your iPhone through gFlash Pro in the format of a flash card.
So this is how I personally put that process to work.
I created separate Google Spreadsheets for each of the courses we took during the 3 week period:
Within the individual spreadsheets I input all of the review questions for each course. I input the question in column A and the answer in column B. I repeated this process until I had input all of the review questions for each course. I then shared the document with all gWhiz Mobile Users allowing it to be used by anyone that has access to gFlash Pro to brush up their knowledge of the programs.
The instructors that worked with us fromĀ DMA (Digital Media Academy)Ā were amazing. They took us deep into the programs and really showed us how to utilize the tools to their fullest potential. Having the ability to review all of these lessons in the palm of my hand is an amazing feature of the iPhone. I constantly quiz myself while Iām on the bus and moving from place to place to make sure I am always at the top of my Pro Applications game.
Iāve made my set of flash cards available for everyone to use on gFlash Pro. You can get gFlash on your iPhone by visiting the iTunes store and downloading the application. Once you have the application on your phone simply touch the icon āDownloadā. Once this is selected you will be prompted to select the source you wish to download from. I have made my flash cards available from the gWhiz Catalog so select āDownloadā on that option.
You can then select over hundreds of different card sets to study from. I have listed mine as below:
DMA/LENNON BUS: Logic Pro Level 2
DMA/LENNON BUS: FCP 300
DMA/LENNON BUS: Motion 101
I hope this helps some of you brush up on your Pro Application user skills. Remember if you are getting ready to take a certification test these suckers will be your new best friend.
Thanks for checkinā it out.

Written byĀ Tyler WinickĀ of the John Lennon Tour Bus
If you know anything about the John Lennon bus youāll know that we travel the country 10 months out of the year making music and video projects with students around the country. Weāve recently teamed up with the Digital Media Academy to bring week long, hands on music video production courses to campuses across the nation this summer. The course is called āCome Togetherā and will offer in depth instruction on the creation of music videos all the way from droppinā beats like a clumsy farmer to editing like Spielberg, thatās Mr. Spielberg to you buddy.
Iāll be co-instructing the Music Video course with an experienced member of the DMA team, Travis Schlaffman, who has led teen summer camps from DMA now for six years and has a lot to teach and some pretty cool tattoos!! Iām looking forward to it and It should be a great collision of Bus style projects fused with DMAās critical hands on learning. For more info visit:digitalmediaacademy.org.Ā See you this summer!

What an amazing 3d video game design experience! Digital Media Academy offers creative 3d Video Game Design courses for adult professionals, teens, and kids. All 3d Game Design courses are taught using the latest software, applications and game engines currently being used in the video game industry. Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max are two of the most popular software programs available that allow students to createĀ realistic, 3dĀ characterĀ models and animation movies.
In the teen 3d game design course programs, students create a full 3d game level. An entire virtual world is created for their video game. The students then create a fully customizable 3d character model to enter and play with in their 3d world! Many teens who stay for the overnight camp experience get involved in network LAN party to play against all the other students’ 3d characters. This is more than just a summer camp experience. This is the full digital art and technology computer camp experience you can only find at Digital Media Academy. You can see an actual student’s experience in this video.
