For Adults: Maya 2010: Animation and Visual Effects

Put your animation skills to work in this intensive Maya class

Animation is all about bringing things to life, and Maya is the gold standard in 3D animation. This course focuses on the basics of Maya’s incredible animation toolset. The traditional principles of animation are outlined to help you understand how to create character movement that appeals to your audience. Using pre-modeled and rigged characters, we manipulate keyframes and function curves for believable motion. Using time-honored techniques such as pose-to-pose and layered keyframing, we build up a library of character animation, including walk cycles and free-form expressive movement.

Character movement is one aspect of animation, but there’s another world waiting to be explored: visual effects. Any animation task that would be too complex to keyframe by hand is a good candidate for a dynamic simulation. Examples include colliding objects, hair, cloth, and liquid or gaseous effects. In this course, we also take an introductory look at Maya’s excellent tools for 3D dynamic effects such as fire and smoke. With both character animation and visual effects under your belt, you’ll have a solid understanding of the range of possibilities in Maya.
