Course Overview
Adobe After Effects training with expert Betsy Kopmar. Take your video and 3D footage to the next level in this week-long VFX intensive. Use the powerful postproduction and visual effects tools in After Effects Pro to create stunning composites using blue screen keys, motion tracking, virtual 3D cameras, rotoscoping, and paint. Whether it’s real world projects or the far reaches of sci-fi space, learn the techniques used to merge video, 3D, and effects into a seamless blend.
Complete your own personal film or work with our supplied footage to build a complex VFX shot.
Participants will use After Effects 7 Professional to explore a full range of postproduction tools and techniques including create green screen footage, use color keys to separate foreground and background, rotoscope to create moving masks, motion track to mix green screen footage or 3D renders with video and painted backgrounds, apply effects such as particle trails, fire and explosions, and use AE’s 3D camera to add movement, depth of field blurs and other final touches to the composite.
DMA will supply project footage and each student is encouraged to bring video, graphics, or 3D animations that they can integrate into their own final project. 3D model files can opened here using Maya, 3DMax or Cinema 4D. DV cameras are available and shooting can be done in the DMA green screen studio.
Recommended resource is Mark Christiansen’s “After Effects Studio Techniques”; students will also receive a DMA Project Guide for the course.
Prerequisites
After Effects I or equivalent experience.
DMA’s Recommended Multiweek and Multilevel Course Tracks

The suggested tracks below are just a few of the many course combinations that are available. You may even want to try a completely different topic each week over multiple weeks. To build your own course track, please go to our Stanford schedule page.
